Jesse Owens was born on September 12, 1913 in Oakville, Alambama. Jesse was the seventh of elven children in his family. While in Alambama his parents were sharecroppers which led to the decision to move to Clevland for better economic oppurtunity. Jesse original name was James Clevland Owens. During his first day at school in Clevland his teacher ask him his name and he said J.C. "initials and what his mom called him" the teacher heard Jesse and the name stuck.
